Kelly Blue Book Lists 2010 Top Green Cars
Kelly Blue Book, ultimate authority on all things with four wheels and an engine, has come out with its Top 10 Green Cars for 2010. This list, which includes all mass-market vehicles, scores green cars on the basis of carbon dioxide, fuel economy, safety, and "driving enjoyment". The "green" cred of a vehicle can be measured in several ways. This rating tries to take into account which vehicles most people may be seen driving.
Ten: Chevy Tahoe Hybrid
Anyone who calls hybrid vehicles "weenie" or "weak" needs to meet the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid. This hybrid can tow almost 3 tons with the heavy-duty engine and 22 mpg. While the fuel economy isn't anything exciting, it is 6 mpg more than the non-hybrid Tahoe.
9 - Toyota Highlander Hybrid
The most well-tested hybrid technology, despite problems with recalls, still can be found in Toyotas. The Highlander Hybrid will cozily seat seven and still get 26 mpg. All-wheel drive means this family car can be a good choice throughout the entire year.
BMW 335d : Eight
It's a fancy-schmancy BMW, so the 335d has creature comforts most people barely dream of. The 6-cylinder engine runs on diesel, so with 36 mpg highway and 27 mpg overall, the BMW 335d rivals some hybrids for efficiency.
Honda Fit - #7
Even Kelly Blue Book admits that other Hondas get better gas mileage, but it gives the Honda Fit (31 mpg) a spot in its list for other reasons. The Fit Sport has paddle shifters that give a feeling of power without sacrificing environmental impact.
Ford Escape Hybrid : Number 6
With the room of an SUV but 32 mpg, the Escape Hybrid is a full-size vehicle. The drivability of the Ford Escape is greatly improved by the experience of vehicle builders at Ford. Parallel parking assistance, integrated blind spot mirrors, and the (perhaps controversial) infotainment system vault it up to number 6.
5 - Mini Cooper
One of the many jewels in Fiat's vehicular family, the Mini Cooper gets 32 mpg. The gas-powered Mini Cooper is available everywhere, though the Mini E is being tested in a few cities. That is, if you can fit in it.
Volkswagen Golf TDI - #4
Volkswagen, originators of the high-efficiency diesel engine in mass market cars, has won again with the Golf TDI. With a low end torque ratio that provides plenty of power, the 34 mpg engine offers lots of driving fun.
3 - Ford Fusion Hybrid
The rating on the Ford Fusion Hybrid is 39 mpg average. With an LCD gauge cluster that makes car-geeks' hearts go pitter-patter, the Fusion Hybrid also has plenty of mid-size sedan room.
2 - Honda Insight Hybrid
The Honda Insight is the least expensive hybrid vehicle available, and tops out at $23,810 for a fully-loaded 41 mpg vehicle. A decent audio system, voice-activated navigation, Bluetooth and more can make you forget that your ride is helping cut down on fuel usage, too.
Toyota Prius - #1
At 50 mpg, the newest Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid gets 50 miles per the gallon. The gas-assisted engine can go several hundred miles, and solar-powered ventilation gives the hybrid plenty of green credibility.
