Insulating my attic with new insulation or add on?
I have about 5 or 6 inches of old brown, very dirty looking insulation with a vapor barrier underneath. According to http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=calcRValue that would mean I have a r value of 21. I would like to insulate to r50 or r60. Should I just pile r30 ontop of the old insulation, or throw out the old insulation and reinsulate with everything new?
Answer:
I'm in the same boat. My idiot contractor never sealed the penetrations (pipes/vents) into the attic. All of the warm air from the basement was heating my attic. The water runoff was causing ice dams.
Best bet is have it done with blown in insulation. They seal all of the holes, insulate the wall connections and put in longer soffit vents. $ for $, more economical for an R-49/50 rating. Plus, the blown in stuff fills in all the gaps.
