What to do when either your front or rear brake gets locked accidentally while bike is running?

I have a GS 500F and just starting on it. My biggest fear is locking both of the brakes accidentally while im on it. What is the best way to unlock either the front or rear break...Thanks....


Answer:

Leaving mechanical failure out – there are few mechanical problems that would cause a brake to lock while riding.

When riding you should not be tense, if your forearms are pumped or your knuckles are white you need to relax, the tension will reduce the information coming from the front wheel and slow your reactions.
Braking should never involve grabbing a lever or stamping on a pedal, progressively apply the brake;
throttle back,
pull the lever in smoothly,
feel the pads biting on the disc,
increase the pressure,
the pads grip on the disc will be firmer,
if it feels that the front wheel is skipping on the surface reduce the pressure on the lever and then gradually reapply it (follow the last point until you stop).
The back brake follows a similar principle – there is generally less feel through the boot and foot.
Most of your braking should be through the front wheel, the proportion gets closer to 70:30 (in favour of the front) in wet weather.
Braking should always take place in a straight line, never try braking in a corner the bike will tend to go straight on rather than follow the corner.
Observation and anticipation will reduce the occasions that need hard braking.

Go to a quiet unused straight road, having ridden for at least ten minutes to warm the tyres, accelerate to 20mph and brake using the technique above, note how far it took you to stop, turn round try it again increasing the pressure each time, once confident try it at a higher speed – NB always practice observation before each manouevre to be sure there is no other traffic.

Don't entertain the idea of bailing off the bike it is rarely, if ever, an alternative you will be going the same speed as the bike when you left it with no way of altering your course or speed until friction from the road slows you.
